SCHWARMINTELLIGENZ - ON AIR DESIGN
CLIENT: Schwarmintelligenz (Media Dietrich & Merseburger GbR)
DESIGN & ART DIRECTION & ANIMATION: Eddy Klaus
MUSIC: Hush Hush

In spring 2023, I received a request to redesign  an on-air design for a "Live Quiz" in northern Germany. What initially sounded interesting turned out to be even more significant and better than I had anticipated. What a project! Creative freedom, open communication with creative clients who discovered me through my Instagram profile and placed their trust in my design from the outset.
Schwarmintelligenz, comprised of Max Dietrich and Jan Merseburger from Hamburg, transitioned from radio and agency life to becoming quizmasters on stages, in pubs, and large venues.
Schwarmintelligenz is a live quiz that taps into the collective intelligence of its participants. The quiz involves a large group of people working together to answer questions and solve problems in real-time. Participants contribute their knowledge and opinions, and the collective responses are used to generate answers. This interactive and collaborative approach aims to harness the combined wisdom of the crowd, fostering a sense of community engagement. The live quiz format enhances the overall experience, creating a dynamic and engaging environment where participants can test their knowledge while also benefiting from the diverse insights of the group.

Schwarmintelligenz already had an on-air design featuring various bumpers for each quiz category. It was already very well executed with a maritime theme, a nod to Hamburg, hence the fish in the logo.
The task was to make it more intense, cooler, larger, and wilder than before. The clients wanted to drop the maritime theme and initially approached me with the idea of transforming everything into a "Synthwave 80s Retro Style." After several brainstorm sessions and mood boards I created, we agreed that we had seen enough of that style, and we wanted to produce a combination of old and new elements in terms of content and style.
- Take an old statue, combine it with a fish hologram, and round it off with glitches. That's the new Schwarmintelligenz look for 2024. - (not really, but damn close :D )
Live quizzes existed before, but the way the guys guide the evening and the visual support on the screens are meant to leave a lasting impression on the quiz participants and distinguish themselves from other events.
A common thread tying the project together was the theme of "transforming the old into something new." This manifested in the concept of statues representing various bumpers within distinct "mini-stories" or conceptual frameworks. The infusion of modern glitches and holograms served to underscore the innovative and forward-looking aspects of the redesign.

Bumper
Sehtest Bumper
There are different categories in which quiz participants have to solve various tasks. Before each new task in a category, a bumper is played.
In this case, it's the bumper for the "Vision Test." (Sehtest) The participants have to solve various tasks related to vision.

Lauschangriff Bumper
Anything related to the theme of hearing can be presented to a participant in this category. For this, participants need to be quiet and listen carefully.

Risiko Bumper
In this category, participants have the chance to win extra points or even lose points. The bumper should convey a sense of danger and threat.

Spezialfrage Bumper
In this category, things get really tricky! Nerd knowledge is required here. Very specific, challenging questions are asked here. The bumper should be distinctive, unlike the rest. The Atlas model holding the globe in its hands represents the nuanced knowledge one needs for this category.

Einlass-Loop
While the quiz participants take their seats and the venue gradually fills up, people are slowly tuned into what awaits them at least visually on that evening. This 2-minute loop (!!!) is played on the screens before the quiz really kicks off.
That was a complex loop featuring various styles and lighting scenarios.

Logo Emblem Loop | Final Left | Alternative Option Right
The fish from the logo extruded as a kind of emblem. On the right side was a test where I applied a similar stone material to the emblem as with the statues. This loop was an extra, allowing the quiz masters to decide where and how they want to use it depending on the situation.

Sammel-Loop
After a block of questions and tasks is completed in the live-quiz, the sheets with answers from the quiz groups are collected. During the collection process, this loop is played on the screens. The final loop lasts over 3 minutes, featuring various glitches and other artifacts. In essence, the loop remains the same.

Block Bumper
The live quiz is divided into 6 blocks. Before each block, a bumper is played to make everyone aware of the current point in the evening.
The animation is always the same, only the glitches and the number at the end are different.
